Motorcycle Maintenance

As fun as it might be to speed down the city streets on your bike, itโ€™s important to remember that owning aย motorcycleย is a privilege. There is a certain level of responsibility you accept when you choose to own a motorcycle. If you neglect this responsibility, then your bike will inevitably suffer the consequences. Lucky for you, basic motorcycle maintenance is relatively simple. When you run into a more complex maintenance issue, Cross Country Powersports has got you covered.

Weโ€™ve put together some essential information for you to get started on maintaining your motorcycle. If you have any questions, be sure to give us a call or stop by our dealership in Metuchen, New Jersey near Newark and Paterson today!

Chains and Belts

In order for your engine to be powered, your bike runs a complex system comprised of chains and belts. For maximum performance, you need to be sure that these parts are well-lubricated and functioning properly at all times. Lubricate regularly and inspect for any tears or frays that require attention. For both of these setups, youโ€™ll want to make sure the slack on both isnโ€™t too loose or tight.

Brakes

You want to be able to rely on your brakes at all times, so make sure the brake fluid is consistently topped off in both the front and back brake fluid reservoir. The brake pads will require routine inspection as well. Youโ€™ll want to confirm they are wearing evenly and that thereโ€™s still ample material to work with. If everything appears fine yet youโ€™re still noticing any unusual grinding, squeaking, pulsating, then you might want to consider having your brake system checked out by a professional.

Tires

It goes without saying that you arenโ€™t going to get very far if you donโ€™t have functioning tires. There are two critical aspects to monitor in your tires. First, you need to keep an eye on the tire pressure. When your tires have too much inflation, it decreases their contact with the road. Too little inflation compromises the tireโ€™s ability to handle the forces pushing down on them. Make a habit of using a tire pressure gauge to measure the inflation levels and adjust as needed.

The second thing you need to pay attention to with your tires is the tread, which affects your bikeโ€™s ability to maintain traction with the road. As time goes on, your tread will get worn down. Always consult your ownerโ€™s manual to know how often you should replace the tires.

In some cases, the tread can wear down at an unnatural rate, which can be caused by a number of things from improper inflation pressure to improper tire alignment. When the tread inevitably becomes too low, you risk losing control of your bike. If you notice that something seems off with the tread, bring your motorcycle in for service.

Fuel and Oil

Check your fuel filter as often as possible. Clogged fuel filters are ineffective and could cause issues like your bike sputtering or struggling to start. You can consider switching to a higher octane fuel if you donโ€™t ride very often because it doesnโ€™t corrode as quickly. Remember that checking your bikeโ€™s oil is just as important as it is to check your carโ€™s oil. Top off as needed but also pay attention to the quality of the oil. If you notice a dark brown color or sludge-like consistency, it might be time to replace the oil and oil filter. If you happen to spot any metallic shavings or powder, make sure you take your bike to a mechanic as this can be a sign that parts of your engine are grinding together.

Battery

The battery is often the first thing riders inspect if a bike doesnโ€™t start. It could be a simple fix like a recharge, but if itโ€™s old then it might need replacing. If you replace or recharge your battery and it still drains too quickly, it might be time to have your alternator looked at. Keep in mind that a battery requires special attention if you store your motorcycle for long periods of time. Hook it up to a trickle charge or at least remove the leads from the posts so you can avoid draining it when itโ€™s not being used.
